About Me

This is a blog about growing up in the Pacific Northwest.

Mind you, I didn’t move here until 1994, when I was in my mid-twenties. Before then, I’d been a nomad. Or technically, an Air Force brat, though I despise that term. I never had roots before, or a place to call home. Now, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I love everything about the Pacific Northwest – the culture, the food, the scenery. Even the rain. (Especially the rain).

The growing up part? Life for me didn’t begin until I was divorced, in 2006. No hard feelings against the ex, but I didn’t become the person I was meant to be until that relationship ended and I was able to stop pretending the life I was living was even remotely what I wanted. Being true to yourself is a liberating feeling. I was finally able to follow my dreams, and they led me to a remarkable place. I continue to grow every day, and probably will until I have no days left.

On The Office, one of the characters remarked, ”I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you actually left them.” Maybe I’m lucky, because I have no doubt these are the good ol’ days for me. I’m a writer and published author engaged to the love of my life, and living in the greatest place on earth. What more could I ask for?

P1030206I write a little bit about a lot of things. Like writing (how meta). And food. Ghosts. Pop culture. Current events. I even throw in an occasional political rant (Republicans, you have been warned). And, of course, I write about my own little slice of paradise, the place I have called home for almost twenty years now. I consider myself a Portlander even though my address is across the river in Vancouver, Washington. It’s easiest to identify with the Pacific Northwest as a whole, I suppose. Sometimes it feels like we’re a different region entirely, tucked way up here in the top left corner of the country, a little bit isolated and marching to the beat of our own drummer.

Which is exactly what I love about the place.

Thank you for following along.

  1. I visited Portland 2 summers ago, and fell in love with your city. I hope you do see your book on a shelf in Powell’s, I could live there too. Hey, send me a maple bacon bar from Voodoo when you get a chance!

    • NOW you’ve struck a chord. Those maple bacon bars from Voodoo are the best! I’m going downtown tomorrow…I just may have to have one. In honor of you, of course!

  2. I just hopped over from a comment you left at The Ramblings! I think I’m gonna like reading your journey. I have always loved to write and only recently (after starting my blog) did I actually think I could make something of myself with it. I’ve also gone through the unemployment line recently but am back in the corporate world again. Perhaps next time I leave, it will be on my own terms! Great stuff man!

  3. Mark, perhaps you can help me. My tech friend is helping me put an 80 cartoon book on kindle/amazon. I want to put a picture of the cover in upper right corner on my blog and about page. If you find some time please tell me how to do this. Is this allowed by wordpreess because they stipulate no advertising? Thank you.

    • Sure thing, Carl. Let me know when you have the link, and I’ll help you with posting it. There’s no rule against promoting a book that you have written…I follow a lot of author blogs and everybody does it. :)

      • I am ready now. Mark I am going to have 100 or so copies of my first 3 cartoon books 100 pics each run off at the local printer to at least get out a first edition of each for my followers and hopefully have more professional printings with perfect binding later. My question is that wordpress indicates no advertising which I do not do but is it OK to promote one’s own book as a post, in widgets column and on about page? I have worked very hard to build my network and do not want to do anything to piss them off and kick me out. Thanks. Just a second back up Q to be sure. I would appreciate your help posting it these ways when I get them printed. I am self publish and self sell with money orders only until I can get some promotion going. Also the personal email I have for you is not working. Please resend that so we do not communicate on your blog.
